3D Branding Identity

What is GUMDROP

GUMDROP is a skate brand that focuses on making skate gear and tools available to all who are skateboarders, rollerskaters, inline skaters, etc. of all levels. We are all about safety when it comes to rolling around the streets and skatepark, whilst looking colorful in your gear. Our goal is to minimize the excessive use of plastic shrinking wrap material used on skateboarding products and to recycle discarded chewing gum off the streets into our wheels, tools, and gear!

Materials

Packaging

Cardboard

Made up of recycled paper, sandwiched between two liners. Very common for these liners to also be made up of recycled content, sourced from old cardboard or other sources of second-hand paper. Cardboard can vary significantly in thickness, hence in strength and durability.

Corrugated Cardboard

A material consisting of a fluted corrugated sheet and one or two flat linerboards. Sometimes called cardboard, although cardboard might be any heavy paper pulp-based board.

Cons:

  • Less Durable

  • Harder to stack

  • Limited Recycling

  • Energy-intensive

  • Contributes to Global Deforestation

Pros:

  • Sustainable

Discarded Chewing Gum

Chewing gum, which has existed since antiquity, was originally made from the sap of different trees. Most modern gum consists of a synthetic rubber called polyisobutylene that is also used to create car tires. It is estimated that as little as 10% of gum is disposed of correctly.

The rubbery, recyclable vehicle for chewing gum’s sugar and flavorings, called gum based, is a mix of resins, polymers, and plasticizers. Since 2018, the US FDA permits more than 40 chemicals under the classification of gum base, including a natural resin such chicle, as well as synthetic polymers such as polyisobutylene.

Cons:

  • Not biodegradable

  • Air Pollution

  • Energy intensive

Pros:

  • Clean fresh breath

  • Durable

  • Recyclable

  • Longevity

Polyurethane

The ingredients of polyurethane can only be extracted from crude oil and natural gas, so these resources are the principle raw materials for polyurethane wheels.

Cons:

  • Extremely toxic

  • Limited recycling

  • Energy intensive

Pros:

  • Ideal for skateboard wheels

  • Durable

  • Cost-Effective

  • Longevity

  • Versatile

Packaging + Brand Name

I decided to use Cardboard for brand packaging. Cardboard can vary significantly in thickness, hence in strength and durability. Made up of recycled paper, sandwiched between two liners. Very common for these liners to also be made up of recycled content, sourced from old cardboard or other sources of second-hand paper. Most importantly, I wanted my product to be exposed because I feel the wheels are just as interesting as the packaging. I want Gumdrop skate gear to look like candy packaging.

Logo

For the logo, Gumdrop is a typographic logo. An inspiration retro aesthetic appeal; BEDROCK DISPLAY. The logo is intended to act as the type on bubble gum packaging — colorful and vibrant. In addition, a gumdrop is technically not chewing gum, it’s a jelly candy. Gumdrop is a play on words for the recycled chewing gum and the term “dropping in” used at the skatepark. You could say the gum drop character is Gumdrops mascot!

Variations

Each color represents different skate products. Gum is generally pink, but nowadays it seems that gum comes in more colors than pink today. Here are possible combinations of colorful packaging Gumdrop can work with to maintain a groovy look.

Additional branding elements

Additional branding patterns to put on skateboarding/sporting gear packaging with combinations of vibrant colors.

Typography

In contrast with the retro typeface Bedrock display used as the logo, a nice geometric san serif was chosen for labeling specific products that are still legible but also maintain Gumdrops personality.

Dimensions

It is known that the majority of skateboard wheels are packaged in plastic shrink wrap. Yes, it is low-cost and light, but toxic to the environment. Gumdrop uses recycled cardboard and corrugated cardboard. So we use small surfaces for packaging for our products to minimize the excess of material. Let's get rid of the “amazon giant cardboard packing for small items”.
